English Bulldogs - Start

English Bulldogs were bred in England for the bloody sport of bull baiting. Bull baiting was a popular entertainment. Besides being a favorite past time of the poor and the rich, bull baiting was a lucrative business. Breeders of the most ferocious dogs that displayed limitless aggressiveness and seemed to feel no pain during a fight were highly priced.

The English Bulldog made a good fighting dog due to its physical characteristics and temperament traits. The breed has a low-set body, which enables it to stand firmly on the ground. The English Bulldog of the past was very agile, which allowed it to escape a bull with ease. The dogs were trained to attack immediately. In fact, the English Bulldog was one of the best canine gladiators of the time.

English Bulldogs - Decline

In 1835, bull baiting was outlawed. Breeders and owners tried to use the English Bulldog in dog fighting. However, this activity did not flourish for too long. The popularity of the English Bulldog plummeted rapidly. Thanks to the efforts of breed fanciers, the English Bulldog did not perish with the ban of bull baiting. Breeders took care to soften the temperament of the dog developing it to be eligible as a companion dog.

English Bulldogs - Today's Functions

The English Bulldog of today differs greatly from its ancestor. Its main function is that of a pet. The breed makes a good family dog and is loved for its amiable personality. English Bulldogs are friendly toward other pets and do not need a lot of care in terms of grooming and exercise, which makes many people choose the breed as a pet.
